The Associated Press: Vatican adviser urges tougher stance with China

  1. The West and Japan bullied China and controlled China in the 19th century.
China was repeatedly defeated by them and by France, the Vatican representative, who helped England force opium on China simultaneous to militarily forcing a treaty on them which opened all China to missionaries. China is the boy who was controlled by bullies when he was young and then learned to fight. And now that grown boy accepts no threats from the West....nor do they want any Western rulers influencing within China including Popes which may be why Protestants do better in China (they have no remote central ruler). This is a classic pendulum swing and the Vatican seems unaware of the emotions beneath the surface.
